Rio Araca Lodge
Remote Trophy Peacock Bass

The owner and operator of the Rio Negro Lodge and Amazon Queen, is proud to announce a new destination for world class peacock bass fishing in Brazil - the Rio Araca Lodge. The new lodge is fully operational and ready to welcome guests. The Araca River was the set location for the Bass Pro Shops / Outdoor World's recent TV program. During the taping of this show, Johnnie Morris caught a huge 25.5 pound peacock bass while his two nephews' both caught pending junior world records.

Rio Araca Lodge houses up to 12 anglers per week. Anglers will go out to fish every day on Tracker Pro Team 165 bass boats. Upon their return they will enjoy fully air-conditioned, deluxe accommodations with five private suites, each with their own private bathroom and two queen beds.

This trip, along with other fishing fly-outs to the area, demonstrated to  owner Philip Marsteller that this was a fishery with great potential. There was only one problem - it was located in such a remote area, it could only be reached by plane for day trips. With this in mind, the Rio Araca Lodge was born. The Araca area is perfect for fly fishing with clearer water available for sight casting.

Fly Fishing for Peacock Bass in Brazil

Peacock Bass Caught on a Fly

The hard fighting peacock bass of Brazil’s Amazon has become the hottest new frontier for the avid fly fisherman. This unbelievably powerful fish will take the two piece 9wt fly rod you have comfortably caught King and Silver Salmon on and turn it into a four or five piece rod in seconds! Anglers that have brought one fly rod with them on their peacock fishing trips bring two or three fly rods with them the next time they fish for peacocks! We recommend quality 9wt or 10wt fly rods when fishing for peacock bass as these rods will help cast the big streamers and flies used for peacock bass.

Peacocks generally make long runs that can take several hundred yards of line quickly. They do generate massive power when they turn to go back to the brush and cover. A good quality reel loaded with 200 yards of Daycron backing and 30 yards of fly line will serve you well. Make sure your fly reel has an outside brake on the spool to enable you to put pressure on the fish when he does decide to run. Remember, the size and weight of the reels must match the rods to ensure a good balanced combination.

You will use primarily floating and intermediate sinking fly line when fishing for peacock bass. Water levels can change quickly necessitating a fast sinking line. The new ghost taper sinking tip fly lines work extremely well with their clear tips.
